Member Spotlight: Charlie Stack
My CrossFit journey began due to general life dissatisfaction about how I looked physically, and how I felt mentally. Growing up my entire life revolved around sports. I spent countless weekends traveling for baseball, football, and basketball. Sports were my life and how I spent 99% of my free time, and I was lucky enough to have success with them. Going into my senior year of high school I knew I was going to have an opportunity to play sports at the collegiate level. I was fortunate enough to receive D3 offers for baseball, and D1 scholarships to play football. After much consideration, I went on to play football for Youngstown State University. After being at YSU for a short period of time, I decided to give up football and come home to be a buckeye. Giving up football, and no longer having the opportunity for competitive sports took its toll on me, and I was not expecting it. I went from playing football and being active 7 days a week, to basically never working out. Since I returned home from playing football 3.5 years ago, I gained 40lbs (I used to be a punter/kicker – bet you never would’ve guessed). The general life dissatisfaction and desire to lose weight led me searching for workout routines with intense training that was upbeat, had structure, as well as a lot of variety. Before long, all signs were pointing to CrossFit. I had heard of CrossFit, and the first thought that came to mind was that it was some sort of ‘workout cult.’ Nevertheless, I realized it was probably a ‘cult’ I needed to join if I wanted to make these life changes. After searching around and considering multiple gyms, and putting it off week after week, I finally decided on CrossFit Clintonville and showed up to 101.
Showing up to 101 and watching the 6:30pm class get finished I was worried about what I was getting myself into, seeing people covered in sweat and laying on the floor I was a little worried if that’s what every day would be like. I almost turned around. I decided to stay and before I knew it I was the sorest I had ever been. Along with barely being able to walk, I quickly realized I was no longer athletic after 3 years of not playing sports. Quite frankly, I felt pretty embarrassed. I remember looking at the scores on the board and the ‘RX’ weights and thinking to myself “I won’t be able to do that for a year.” I also remember seeing scores from people like Ahmed, and just laughing at where I was at in comparison.
Now, three months later, I am in the best shape I have ever been. I have gained friendships and guidance from everyone in the gym, especially Than, Nick, and Colin. So far, I have lost 20lbs (and am on my way to lose more), and dropped my body fat % drastically. I am the strongest I have ever been, I recently set PR for back squat (325) and hang cleans (235). Even better, I am able to do RX most days, and it’s absolutely crazy to me how far I have come in such a short time. I am now the one laying on the floor after class trying to catch my breath scaring away the 101 members.
CrossFit continues to be the best part of my day, and I went from going 3x a week to being upset with myself if I don’t go 5x or more. I try to go every day, because no day is the same and the constant improvements keep me motivated. CrossFit has not only helped me physically, but has done wonders for me mentally. I am much happier with my life now and it challenges me every day, and I love that. CrossFit is holistic, the community is great, and the little things go a long way. I have made a lot of friends, and can’t wait to make more. Having a person cheer you on to finish your workout allows you to do things you would never be able to do on your own (at least for me). I look forward to and I’m excited for many more WODs, hero workouts, future MURPHs, and competing in the future. CrossFit has helped me fill the void I was missing for 3 years, and it means a lot to me. I finally have a hobby! I can’t wait to continue on this journey and see all that I can accomplish.
Lastly, for those of you wondering, CrossFit workouts have definitely challenged me more than sports ever have, even at the college level, but maybe that is because I was just a kicker.
