About a year and a half ago, I finished an 18-year competitive gymnastics career. I began gymnastics when I was two years old, and competed all the way through high school. I attended Brockport, a college in upstate New York, with the intention of competing as a college gymnast. Due to an injury and various other circumstances, I ended up not sticking with gymnastics after a few months of being at Brockport. I was pretty devastated to be done with something I had spent my entire life doing, and I had no idea what to do next. What I did know is that my body needed some time to rest; in my last 6 years of competing, I had broken over 10 bones, and I never let myself properly heal. I quickly became very out of shape. My body was used to working out 4-5 hours a day, so I began to gain weight and feel very unhealthy. I tried going to the gym on my own, but I had no idea what to do and was very unproductive. I never pushed myself in the gym, and had little motivation to even go.
I had a friend who did CrossFit and she was always telling me how much I would love it. I did the Murph with her (not my best idea) and I couldn’t straighten my arms all the way for two weeks, so… I was a little nervous to try CrossFit after that.
After my freshmen year of college ended, I decided to transfer to Ohio State and was determined to find something that made me want to work out. I started doing some research, and found CrossFit Clintonville. I decided that I was going to give CrossFit a go. I had never done any sort of weightlifting before, so I was pretty nervous to try it, but excited to see what I could learn. I still remember in my first class, I could barely figure out how to do an American kettlebell swing, and I thought, “Wow, if I can’t even do this, how am I ever going to figure out anything else?”
Well, it has been about six months at CFC and I am so happy with my decision. All of the coaches have taught me so much and have been so encouraging throughout my time here. The community is amazing and everyone is constantly motivating me to work harder. It is so inspiring to see the competitiveness, passion, and drive everyone has.
I am so pleased with the progress I have made in the six months I have been at CrossFit Clintonville. I now look forward to working out and have so many new goals that I am striving for. I recently got my ring muscle up, which is something I never thought I would be able to do. I cannot wait to see where CrossFit takes me, and I am so grateful that I finally found a workout that I love.
